Active or passive speakers? ... If you're just starting out and not sure whether to get powered or non-powered speakers we would recommend a passive desk and active speakers every time. An active speaker package is flexible, meaning you can add to it over the years as your band begins to play larger venues. 10" or 12" speakers you buy now can be used as monitors if you want to upgrade to 15" in the future, or you can add bass bins later for a fuller sound. You can also double your number of speakers in time, and still run them off the same mixing desk. Have a look at the LD Systems speakers such as the LDPN1222A powered and LDPN1222 non-powered speakers in the online shop - customer feedback is excellent about the quality, sound and ruggedness of these models.

Should you be buying powered speakers, a powered mixing desk or a powered amplifier? It's a  mind-boggling question if you don't know the answer, but it's actually quite simple to decide. A band PA system only needs one source of power, so you would either have powered speakers (they contain their own amplifiers and plug into the mains as well as the mixing desk), or passive speakers ... if you choose passive speakers you need some other source of power, so you can choose a powered mixing desk with an amp built in such as the LD Systems LDLAX12DA, or a passive mixing desk such as the LD Systems LDLAX8D and a separate power amplifier such as the LD Systems LDPA40.  If you want less gig gear to lug around then powered speakers or a powered mixer means no separate amplifier - one less thing to carry. If weight is an issue, a powered mixer is less heavy than powered speakers. If your mind is still boggled, give us a call on 01375 892317 and we'll help you to choose!

Mixing desks ... If you are considering micing-up lots of instruments you need to make sure that your mixer has the right number and type of input channels - our unique What PA Designer will help you with this. An average band will need at least a 12 channel mixer such as the LD Systems LDLAX12D to give you the flexibility to plug in everything, especially if you're using wireless mics or wireless in-ear monitors. If you play loud then micing-up allows you to have a lower stage volume level so that you don't damage your ears! We would normally recommend 15 inch speakers for a typical set up with a full stage monitor system.

Speakers and Monitors ... For medium bands (typically one or two guitars, bass and drums, vocalist and maybe a keyboard) we'd normally recommend 12" band speakers, but if your style of music is on the heavy side and you are planning to mike up the bass or drums through the PA, then you should consider 15" speakers. Large bands need a rugged, professional-quality set up at an affordable price. Playing larger venues, there will probably be a need to mike up instruments and have the mixer at the back of the hall, connected to the stage via a multicore cable (stage box). If you are playing at a reasonable level then we would recommend using stage or in-ear monitors - this really does help you to sing in tune! Did you know that you can use one wireless receiver with multiple belt-packs and ear pieces, so everyone in the band can have their own in-ear monitor at a very reasonable cost. Check out the LD Systems MEI100 In-Ear Monitor System in our online shop.

Microphones ... the LD Systems D1011 wired mics are getting some fabulous reviews at the moment, they're being compared favourably with Shure SM58s at a fraction of the cost. For home recording you'd go a long way to beat the Heil PR-40.

How many watts do you need? ... take a look at our How Many Watts page in the Advice Centre for some tips on this.

Our Top Tips for getting the best out of rehearsal time!

Get there on time
There's nothing worse than one person getting to the rehearsal rooms late and wasting everyone's time. If it take longer for you to set up your equipment, see if you can get in earlier so that you all finish setting up at the same time.
Agree what you're going to rehearse before you get there
Make sure everyone knows what you're rehearsing. At the end of the rehearsal agree what you will do next time - send an email to remind everyone!
Practice your parts before the rehearsal
Band rehearsals are for rehearsing the band - not to learn individual parts!
Don't play too loud - it's not a gig!
It is quite easy to play too loud at rehearsals and often you will find that at gigs you will be playing at a lower level. If your ears feel uncomfortable then turn down.
Use the instruments that you will gig with
Part of rehearsal time is about getting the sound right, so use the instruments and effects you will actually use at the gig.
