Active or Passive speakers

What are they?

Passive speakers are just speakers - that's it. They are powered by a separate PA amplifier.

Active (or powered) speakers have an amplifier built into them so that they do not need a separate amplifier.

What should we get?

There is no straight answer to this as both choices are perfectly OK. However the benefits/disadvantages are:

  Pros Cons
Passive
  • More flexible if you want to upgrade
  • More options/combinations available
  • Cheaper to repair
  • More expensive than an active solution
Active
  • Cheaper than passives and amps
  • You have some built in resilience. If one of the active speakers fails, you can run off the other
  • Less flexible in terms of upgrading

You'll find our whole range of active, passive and flat panel speakers in our Online Shop - click here for more information.
